I am currently implementing a Blog into our Library Website. We are going to be involved in The Big Read (www.neabigread.org), and have yet to decide whether to go with a Wiki or a Forum to enable participants across the states an easier way to communicate. At first I was leaning towards a Wiki, but I almost like the Forum idea better at this point. I was actually looking at putting a Wiki into place for the Library as well as a Blog, but I feel it may be a little too high maintenance for sharing amongst staff and patrons. Using it internally, I agree with. I think we may look at putting one in for the collaborative aspect. Although, getting staff comfortable enough to use it may be difficult, as grammatically stated. Thank you for the information sharing. That is the reason I started my own personal Blog, but I am waiting to have information I deem important enough to share:)

On the wikis- I would definitely recommend them for internal staff use. My library just implemented a wiki to keep track of projects and it has helped immensely with communications between staff. The only caveat I would have is that everyone must be willing to work with the wiki. This kind of goes into the realm of getting library staff to be comfortable with such software, but that may be another course there in itself. ;-)

It looks like you had a very fascinating and fun course. Thanks for sharing! :-)

You have 2 friends now ;) I've just sent you a request to be my friend awwww....haha I didn't have anyone added though I joined! I wasn't all that impressed with the tool, likely do to the fact that I feel a little old for this game ;) My sister, and her crew (22 or younger) seem to prefer my space but again can't get into that either, my cousins 18 and younger seem to like both any thing to steal a few more minutes of internet time :) whatever happened to going outside, talking on the phone, and watching TV....shessh (shaking my granpa fist in the air ;) )

All good points, Heather. The biggest downside of podcasting, for me, is that they are "real time", which you touched on in your post. That is, if the podcast is an hour long, you need an hour to listen to it! You can't skim it, or bookmark bits that you'd like to get back to later. However, I have a feeling that as the technology develops, these features might eventually come.

Thanks for the link, Heather. The figures don't really surprise me. I think that podcasting will catch on; it's just taking its sweet time. I think that those who are "in the technological know" and those who are taking courses specifically designed to study new technology may sometimes have a somewhat unrealistic impression of what the general populace knows about the latest and greatest technology. I have a friend who has had a blog for about 4 years, but only until a year ago did I really know what they involved. I suppose it's all about the marketing!

Ha! That's too funny, Heather. I signed up for facebook because Jessica from Minnesota invited me to a few months ago, but I have not used it since. Other than to update my photo which for some reason seemed like a good thing to do. I felt very old when I was looking at the other profiles. I may try MySpace since I do often look at some of the pages there, particularly for bands.

Hi Heather - I, too, agree that it's pretty much futile to resist folksonomies. So, if we decide that controlled vocabulary and tags should co-exist, how do we go about making that happen in our libraries? This is where I get stuck a little. Tagging in the catalogue seems to make the most sense, but I have a feeling that we're most of us are far from having the technical abilities to make this a reality in our OPACs. And, while tagging in the OPAC *sounds* like a great idea, it really only works when you reach critical mass - i.e.: many/most of your users tag catalogue records. And, if you're a small-ish library, can you hope to reach critical mass? Probably not. So, can we start aggregating tags across OPACs? Is this something WorldCat should be doing? (they've already jumped on the user-generated content bandwagon with thier implementation of book reviews. Which has fallen flat, unfortunately).

No answers, just more questions to think about!

I think you couldn't be more on the money when you say that "resistance is futile" and "the web is so large and ever-changin that paying professionals to classify it all is just impossible - folksonomies are "better-than-nothing" so we'd better get used to it and stay on top of this technology". I keep repeating myself as I post my replies, but once again, folksonomies and controlled vocabularies each have their merits and downfalls, and as you say folksonmies are becomming more and more accepted and widely used, so instead of debating what is better, shouldn't we try to find a happy medium and take the best of both worlds and find a happy place?
